New Frontier Implosion Set for November 13

Another long time casino is disappearing from the Las Vegas strip. Plans have been made to implode the New Frontier on November 13th at 2:30 a.m. The New Frontier was sold for $1.2 billion in May and closed in July.

The implosion is being handled by a company called Controlled Demolition. They have done many Las Vegas implosions including the Aladdin, Dunes, Castaways, Hacienda, Sands and the Stardust.

During the wee morning hours of March 13, 2007, Sin City was about to close another chapter of old-style Las Vegas. The legendary Stardust Resort and Hotel said its final good night. At 2:00 am the implosion event kicked off with a spectacular five minute fireworks display leading into a ten second countdown. As the crowd cheered, the resort quickly went down in a cloud of dust.

The Stardust Hotel and Casino was built in 1958 and was once known as the largest resort with 1000+ rooms. It was one of the first high rise hotels to go up in Las Vegas. After 48 years, the Stardust was still enjoyed by it’s loyal customers. Many saying that it was the best old school hotel around.

Once the dust settles, a new development is already in the works. Construction due to start in 2007 is a $4 billion project, the Echelon Resort will cover 63 acres. Echelon Resort is expected to have 25 restaurants and bars and four hotels with as many as 5,300 rooms. Echelon Resort will have 2,600 room in its Resort Tower and 700 suites in the Suites Tower. The 3 other boutique hotels will be the Hong Kong based Shangri-LA Hotel, the South Beach Miami success, Delano Hotel and Manhattan famed Mondrian Hotel. Echelon Resort is due to open in 2010.

Stardust Implosion Set for March 13, 2:30 AM

There are unconfirmed reports that the implosion of the legendary Stardust Hotel is set for March 13th at 2:30am. The closest I have come to an official word this is a person claiming to work for the demolition company leaving a comment on an LA Times story about Stardust implosion that says:

I work for the company doing the implosion – it is March 13th @ 2:30 am. We are having a large event for this the 11 – 13th.

Boyd Gaming, who owns the land, has sworn the media to secrecy in an attempt to keep the crowds small during the implosion. The Stardust is being torn down to make way for the new $4 billion Echelon Place project.
